‘Mortal Kombat’ Movie Gets Progress Update

I’m sure a lot of people were psyched when it was first announced that the guy who made that awesome Mortal Kombat: Legacy web-series (Kevin Tancharoen) would be directing the next Mortal Kombat movie, but it’s been a while since we’ve really heard anything more about it. We know that the second “season” of the Machinima series is due out soon, and we know that the movie is happening, but we now have a status update on the movie’s script, as well as how the Legacy series will relate to the feature length film, thanks to an interview with ComingSoon.

We’re still pushing through on that. The script is in a good place, we’re just kind of figuring out the budget and locations and that whole process is where we’re at.

Well, I guess we’ve still got some time to sit and wait anxiously for the movie to be made. In the mean time, I’m sure a lot of people are wondering how the movie will tie into the series that inspired the folks over at Warner Bros. to give another film a try; as it turns out, they actually won’t be connected at all.

I think everyone’s intention is to start fresh because we want Legacy to live on its own possibly for multiple seasons, and when it comes to Mortal Kombat, it’s been around for 20+ years. We’re going to take the mythology and add another layer on it so it can live on for another 20 years, or more! I think this is a unique opportunity to set that ground work.

I guess that makes sense, but I was sort of expecting the movie’s story to somehow be connected to the story of the series, which has been a pretty big hit with fans and critics. I mean, there was that silly Mortal Kombat: Konquest show, and that went on around the same time as the crappy movies, so I don’t see why two decent versions of the franchise can’t co-exist.

I’ll be honest; I’m not entirely convinced that a Mortal Kombat film can work, and I’m not sure I want to see them try again. As with most things in the entertainment industry, I have a feeling they are going to move along without my konsent.
